What Gear Do I Need to Get Started in Triathlon?

A no-stress checklist for new triathletes.
So, you’ve signed up for your first triathlon (or you're close to hitting that "Register" button) and now you're wondering: “Do I need to buy all the gear?”

Short answer: No.

Long answer: You just need the right essentials to start strong, and finish with a smile. Let’s break it down into Swim, Bike, Run. No overwhelm. Just what you need to get going.

Swim Gear

You don’t need to be Michael Phelps to start your swim training, but having the right gear will make it way easier (and way less stressful).

Essentials
•  Swimsuit – Go for something snug that won’t drag in the water
•  Goggles – Comfort and clear vision are key. Test them before race day
•  Swim Cap – Most races provide one, but bring your own for training
•  Towel – You'll need it in transition or after training

Nice-to-Haves
•  Wetsuit – Only needed for colder races (and not always mandatory)
•  Pull buoy, paddles, fins – Great for swim drills as you improve
•  Anti-chafe cream / Petroleum Jelly – Trust us, your neck will thank you during wetsuit swims

Bike Gear

Your New Best Friend on Two Wheels: This is where things can feel a bit gear-heavy, but don’t let it scare you off. You don’t need a carbon spaceship to get started.

Essentials
•  Bike – Road bike is perfect for most beginners (read our Road Bike vs. TT Bike blog if you're deciding)
•  Helmet – Mandatory. Get one that’s certified and fits well
•  Cycling shorts or Tri suit – Padding = comfort
•  Water bottle & cage – Hydration is KEY
•  Spare tube, CO2 Cartridge and Tire Levers – Flats happen. Be ready.

Nice-to-Haves
•  Clip-in pedals & cycling shoes – Great upgrade once you’re comfortable
•  Sunglasses – Keep bugs, wind, and sun out of your eyes
•  Bike computer – Helps track your rides and progress
•  Bike tools or multitool – For quick fixes on the go

Run Gear

Running is the simplest of the three disciplines, but the right shoes can make or break your experience.

Essentials
•  Running shoes – Get fitted at a proper running store if you can
•  Comfortable running clothes or Tri suit – Light, breathable, and non-chafing
•  Race belt – Handy for your bib number on race day

Nice-to-Haves
•  Running cap or visor – Keeps sun and sweat out of your eyes
•  Elastic laces – Speed up your T2 transition
•  Socks – Some go sockless, but if you wear them, invest in good ones
•  Watch or fitness tracker – Optional but motivating

Final Thoughts: Start Simple, Grow As You Go

You don’t need all the gadgets or the fanciest bike to become a triathlete. Start with the
basics, train consistently, and upgrade as you go. The most important piece of gear?

Your mindset🧠.
